P!nk - Dear Mr. President
Dear Mr. President
Come take a walk with me
Let's pretend we're just two people
and you're not better than me
I'd like to ask you some questions
if we can speak honestly
What do you feel when you see
all the homeless on the street
Who do you pray for at night
before you go to sleep
What do you feel
when you look in the mirror
Are you proud?
How do you sleep
while the rest of us cry
How do you dream when a mother
has no chance to say goodbye
How do you walk
with your head held high
Can you even look me in the eye
And tell me why
Dear Mr. President
Were you a lonely boy
Are you a lonely boy
Are you a lonely boy
How can you say
No child is left behind
We're not dumb and we're not blind
They're all sitting in your cells
While you pave the road to hell
What kind of father
would take his own daughter's rights away
And what kind of father
might hate his own daughter if she were gay
I can only imagine
what the first lady has to say
You've come a long way
from whiskey and cocaine
How do you sleep
while the rest of us cry
How do you dream when a mother
has no chance to say goodbye
How do you walk
with your head held high
Can you even look me in the eye
Let me tell you bout hard work
Minimum wage with a baby on the way
Let me tell you bout hard work
Rebuilding your house
after the bombs took them away
Let me tell you bout hard work
Building a bed out of a cardboard box
Let me tell you bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
You don't know nothing bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
Oh
How do you sleep at night
How do you walk
with your head held high
Dear Mr. President
You'd never take a walk with me
Would you?

I adore pink. Always have. One of my favorite things about her is that there's almost always an attempt to reach out and tell young women "you don't have to be XYZ...be your own person. Be strong" and I think it's an important message. Every album has it. So I love her. :) This was just nice to see as well.
She does plenty of philanthropy, which you might know if you bothered to investigate rather than making baseless assertions. As for the commentary on homosexuality, what the fuck are you even talking about? Where is the statement or declaration anywhere in that song suggesting that anyone has no rights to say/think/feel whatever they want to? The point was to call into question the caliber of a person who would cast out their own child for being gay/lesbian, which is what happens in a lot of families of 'good conservative christians".
I personally think she is tremendous and that this is one of the best things she has ever done, but support your right to think whatever you want to think - and I'm sure she would as well.
As for the republicans caring about the poor - i know that they are very unfair with the poor and don't bother with them a lot of the time and the minimum wage is disgusting but what i am saying is, there is never ever going to be no homeless, it is very unfair for her to blame the whole problem on the president. where there homeless while the democrats were in power? yes.
the next thing i want to address is how she tells him that he doesn't know what hard work is. to put it plain and simply, quite obviously he does otherwise he would not be in the position he is in. and i think that as a president he would have SOME conception of what hard work is - it wouldn't exactly be a picnic. just because the work he does is not something she agrees with doesn't mean it isn't hard work.
another point i am going to make is how she talks about how a child dies and a mother has no chance to say goodbye. i can only assume that she is addressing the iraq war and the deaths there. well i don't agree with this at all. there is no conscription in the US, people VOLUNTEERED to be in the army, they weren't forced to join. war is kinda part of the deal when you join the army even if it not for a reason you agree with, that is a risk u take when you join.
lastly show me an example of p!nk's philanthropy and and proof of it - and not a charity concert. that is not exactly in her words "hard work". in fact her job would be a hell of a lot easier than his.
i agree with you about her message to girls and everything about her- i think she has done a terrific job in all other aspects of her career. she has dignity and isn't afraid to say what she thinks but in this case i think her beliefs are totally skewed.
You're very naive, Kate. No one is saying that the total eradication of homelessness and poverty is a feasible goal, only that we should be trying harder and that the leaders of the strongest, most powerful country in the world have a responsibility to its citizens to see them all as equals and represent them as such. There is equal blame to go around for the conditions of the poor, but the current administration has not made a single actionable directive in assisting those issues in it's lifespan, and historically speaking the conservatives never have. Yes, there were homeless in previous administrations, but at least in those times the issues were raised and debated, and headway was made in getting assistance to those that needed it most.
George W. bush has never worked manual labor, he comes from privilege roots and has been enabled by power and wealth to ascend to his throne. He has never been an exceptional student, he has never served the full expectation of his military service. He HAS however taken more days off in both of his administrations than any other president in history. The average American citizen cannot relate to anyone like him on these merits, much like he is out of step wth basic human needs and the struggles many of us have in achieving them - he's never had to. His handlers and his fans who support him and enable him by doing the leg work. George W. Bush knows nothing about hard work.
I, like many, don't give a fuck if it is an all volunteer army - when one of our own dies in a senseless war, it should diminish us all as human beings. Unless you've lost a child and know what that feels like, you have no business making statements like that to me. Seriously, I'll write you off and ban you from that in the future. Don't push this issue with me, I've grown up in a military town and in a military family and I KNOW what I'm talking about.
How about this - if you want to know, get the info yourself. pinkspage.com and looktothestars.org are resources to start with. Looking for signs of hypocrisy in a musician who is making a statement is hardly comparative to a world leader who is failing his own people, in fact it's a really weak argument.
We don't have to agree, Kate - but I'd really appreciate it if you'd engage me in arguments about real issues of policy and social justice rather than your distaste of a protest song, because that stuff is real. I've said everything I care to say about P!nk and this song, so unless there's something else more vaild you wish to debate, I'm really done with this.
